There is an alternative 457(b) plan that is offered through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems that can be elected in addition to or in place of your current 403(b). It is called the Washington Deferred Compensation Program (DCP). DCP allows you to set aside pre-tax contributions each month, just like a 403(b) plan. It offers several investment options, a flexible contribution schedule and a more lenient system of withdrawal.
If you are interested in learning more about DCP you can call 1-888-327-5596 or go online at www.wa.gov/DRS/dcp. You can also contact Kari Gossett in Business Services at (509) 228-5468 to obtain more information.Planning for the 2 additional collaboration days as provided by I-728 funding should have already taken place in your buildings. You need to contact your principal if this isn’t the case. Below is an excerpt of the language found on pages 39 and 40 of the collective bargaining agreement. The underlined portions are for emphasis.
Collaboration is best when everyone participates. Because of the scheduling challenges it is quite possible that some teachers can’t make the agreed upon dates. This is not a mandatory activity although it is strongly suggested that all participate. Members who are absent forfeit their claim for remuneration.
The collaborative activities must be agreed upon through staff participation. The use of the word and is to be taken literally. Input from the staff needs to be sought out and leadership teams will be involved. This is not to be district led in-service, nor should it be a top down decision. Staff input is a critical and neccessary step in the process.
For the 2008-09 school year, two (2) days at the per-diem rate of pay will be available for building collaboration time. These collaboration days may include in-building activities, cross-building activities, and staff development in support of student learning. Individuals unable to participate in the collaboration activities will not be eligible for pay. In scheduling and planning for the use of these days, building administrators must seek input from their certificated staff and consult with their building leadership team.
ARTICLE V, LEAVES offers a comprehensive listing of the leaves available to you. It can be found in the contract on pages 26-32. The federal Family Medical Leave Act and the Washington Family Leave Act have provided more options for families while at the same time complicating matters. Our personnel office is willing to help with any questions you might have regarding these programs.
Two of the more often used choices for leave are found below. Please take time to read the entire section and familiarize yourself with your rights.
Section A Illness, Injury and Emergency Leave
Employees shall have twelve (12) days leave of absence for personal illness, injury, or emergency. This leave may also be used to care for a child of the employee with a health condition that requires treatment or supervision or for a spouse, parent, parent-in-law or grandparent of the employee who has a serious health condition or an emergency in accordance with state and/or federal law. Further, it may be used for the illness or death of a relative of the employee or someone with whom the employee has a close personal relationship. It may also be used for problems requiring an employee’s personal attention for which preplanning is not possible.
In addition to the above, employees shall have two additional days of emergency leave annually. The additional emergency leave is non-accumulative.
Section E Personal Leave
Certificated employees shall be entitled to three (3) personal leave days per year, which shall be with full pay. Certificated employees may carry over up to two (2) unused personal leave days from year to year. Two (2) days carried over, plus three (3) days from the current year will equal a maximum of five (5) days to be available in any one year. Unused personal leave may be cashed in each year at the substitute rate of pay. Personal leave days may be taken in half-day increments.
Use of personal leave day(s) shall be at the employee’s discretion (no reason required) with the following limitations:
The superintendent or his/her designee may authorize exceptions to these limitations.
If you want reimbursement for supplies and tuition in your January check the deadline is December 1. Go to MyCVSD and download the corrected form.

If you are interested in being nominated for any of these positions, please contact Bev Schaefer at 326-4046. The deadline is February 5, 2009.
