It has certainly been a busy summer for me and for the Association. We were chosen as one of eight districts and one consortium of small districts to pilot the new Teacher and Principal Evaluation Process. The application for this w
If your name or address changed this summer it is important that you notify the Central Valley Education Association as soon as possible. This will help us keep our membership information up to date and will also insure that you receive your WEA and NEA publications.

One of the best conceived and under used offerings from the District is the Cafeteria 125 plan. Under this plan, out of pocket expenses such as insurance and pharmacy co-pays, adult care and even day care expenses can be earmarked before taxes for use.
Say you have estimated that your yearly expenses for pharmaceutical and medical co-pays, and day care amounted to $1000/year. By setting aside that amount of money done monthly for the year, the taxable income is less, the Social Security contribution is less and the money is available for use for those purposes. Simply present the receipts to the Payroll dept., and a reimbursement will be forthcoming.
The advantages are obvious the same expenses as always are drawn from “tax free” money, rather than from “after tax” funds.
The disadvantages are slight. If you overestimate the amount needed, you would lose the rest. If, for example, you estimate having expenses of $1200, and only utilize $1000, there would be a loss of $200. Careful planning can alleviate that loss.

You have the right to have representation of your union present in a meeting with management about employee discipline if you ask for it. In 1975, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a case called Weingarten that an employee has the right to union representation when the employee “reasonably believes the investigation will result in disciplinary action” and when the employee requests representation.
What do you do?
If the administrator does not give you a directive to attend the meeting, then state that you will reschedule when your CVEA rep. can attend and then call CVEA.

The state allocation for medical expenses has gone up to $768 per employee per month while medical charges have risen 13.3 %, WDS dental is down around 2 % ($2.55) but Willamette Dental has no change. Vision coverage went down approx 1 % which is a whopping 15 cents. To find out more about current charges and their impact on your paycheck go to MyCVSD and click on the Business Services tab at the top. Follow the pull down menu to find up to date insurance premiums as well as a monthly calculator for out of pocket expenses.
Our Employee Assistance Program is a program that provides counseling sessions for members and their families under strict rules of confidentiality. Find the Human Resources tab on MyCVSD and follow the link to more information.
The best way to answer all your questions is to attend the Benefit Fair this October 6 th, from 4 to 7 PM at Central Valley High School Commons. Representatives will be there to present all your options and guide you through the process. The open enrollment period will end November 15. Also note that paperwork for benefit changes must be to payroll by the 15th of each month.

Central Valley voters continue to be supportive of levies during very tough economic times. The Kids First Campaign is instrumental in getting and maintaining that support.
We can really help this cause by simply participating in a payroll deduction for the Central Valley Citizens for Education fund. Sign the letter in your mail box and donate a dollar a month through payroll deduction to the CVCE fund. If every employee in the district did this, the fund raising would basically be taken care of. Please sign up now.
I plan to be in the following buildings during lunch to meet members and answer questions.
