BARGAINING UPDATE

The Central Valley Education Association continues to bargain with the Central Valley School District on reopeners to the current collective bargaining agreement. By contract language items of mutual consent will be discussed each year. Agreements have been reached on several issues and negotiations will continue with the hope of finishing by the end of May. Any tentative agreement will be sent to the members for ratification in early June. Thanks to the bargaining team for finding the time to represent you during this busy time of the year. They are:

WEA/PAC DRIVE REPORT

In a recent email to members I reported that 38 new members to WEA/PAC joined following our recent mailing to members this spring. Our total membership now numbers 12% with a total of 89. We now rank second in eastern Washington and 14th in the state for percent of members enrolled. I will keep you updated on membership figures and how WEA/PAC is spending your contributions next fall. All WEA/PAC members will be sent a re-enrollment form next year. I urge you continue your membership.

In response to a question from a member, the postage to send out the mailing this spring was paid for by WEA/PAC and did not come from WEA members dues. Thanks again. kr

HOW MANY PERSONAL LEAVE DAYS DO YOU HAVE?

As of mid April nearly half of our members (375) have more than three personal days banked with the district. Our contract now provides for three personal days each year and the right to bank up to a maximum of five days (six for this year and next only). Those with more than three days currently banked will need to use those days down to no more than three days by June 12 to avoid losing them (the excess over three) for next year. Unused days from the current year can also be cashed in for sub pay ($88). Your Building Rep has a list of those employees who have more than three days accumulated. If you have questions please call or email the office.

$250 FOR YOU

Time is running out. Please remember to save your receipts for purchases of classroom supplies, tuition and clock hours fees, professional dues and professional publications related to your teaching assignment. These receipts must be turned in by June 1 to receive $250 in reimbursement. The check will be issued at the end of July. Many of you have been spending money out of your pocket for years. Please don’t pass up this opportunity for reimbursement.

RETIRING????

If you have made the decision to retire or to leave the district at the end of the year please consider notifying the personnel department as soon as possible. It would be a great help to the district and to your colleagues in making staffing plans for next year. If you have given the district notice prior to May 22 you will be invited to the dinner held to honor retirees. That dinner will be held on Wednesday May 24 at the Mirabeau Park Hotel at 5:00 PM. Retirees are allowed to invite a guest and will be honored for their service to children and public education by the District and the Association. Remember, to be invited the District and the Association must be notified that you plan to retire. Thank you.

REMARKABLE REUSABLES

The Central Valley Education Association and the Central Valley School District are jointly initiating a program this year to help retiring teachers dispose of unwanted teaching materials accumulated during their career and to provide help and resources to new teachers starting out their careers in the district next year. Teachers who have made the decision to retire at the end of the school year will be asked to box up unwanted materials that they have accumulated over the years. Please label the boxes as to contents and grade level and clearly mark “REMARKABLE REUSABLES”. Be sure to include only the items and materials not considered District property. Leave the boxes in your room at the end of the school year and notify the CVEA that you are participating in the pr

Loren Imus will retire from the CVEA Executive Board this year after serving as the Middle School Rep for several years. Loren has served the Association in many roles over the years. He has been a member of the bargaining team as well as serving as chair of the Special Ed task force. Loren has also been the ACE chair for the Eastern Washington UniServ Council and attended numerous WEA and NEA Representative Assemblies. When you see Loren please thank him for his years of service for his fellow educators and public education.

CONGRATULATIONS!

The Washington Education Association has announced that a Central Valley School District student has written a winning essay in the Association’s student essay contest, A Teacher to Remember. The winning essay was about Scott Krental. The student was in Scott’s class last year at Liberty Lake Elementary. The student wins a $150 gift certificate from Amazon.com and a pizza party for his/her class. WEA will be at the school (University Elementary) to present the prizes in June. Congratulations to Scott and his former student.

END OF YEAR SURVEYS

The annual district Respect Survey will be conducted in a few weeks. Employees will be asked to take the survey on line again this year. This survey will not be of any use unless a majority of employees take the time to fill it out. I urge you to do. This can be a valuable tool to identify the district’s strengths and weaknesses.
