My experience goes beyond my union involvement. I have been active in a variety of settings, assuming a leadership role in all of them. I have coached for 19 years where for a short time I was coaching at the varsity level. I have served as Athletic Director for three years at a small school in Oregon where I got a taste of administration. I served as the head of the math department at CV for 14 years, served on the first math vertical curriculum committee and became the chairman of the committee as we went through a district wide textbook adoption. I also have served for 7 years as an AP Calculus reader and was just selected to be a table leader at the reading this year. Table leaders are in charge of the readers and there are only about 30 high school math teachers nationally who are chosen to this position.
Experience is an important quality in choosing your next president. I would suggest that a broad based resume with the proven ability to work with fellow teachers, administrators and community members will be of paramount importance. Your vote will help choose the next leader of our union. Take the time to talk about the candidates. Ask your building reps for their input and talk to those who might know both of us. Thank you.
I have come to an appreciation of the Education Association (aka: the union) as a fundamental partner with the other stakeholders for a vibrant and sustainable school district. Those stakeholders include, at least, the School Board, district administration, Public School Employees, building administrators, community and parents. Each of these groups has a distinct role to play in making the district function. The Association’s role is primarily to serve the needs of its members in order to help them obtain professional success.
One of the Association’s responsibilities is contract negotiation and maintenance. To that end we are charged with representing our members in matters of “hours, wages, and terms and conditions of employment.” Furthermore, the association represents individuals and groups in the grievance process.
I believe that the Central Valley Education Association continually works to meet those obligations. Over the last decade we have had much success, but there is still more to do. We must continue to strengthen and clarify the contract. We must continue to work at the local, state and national levels to improve compensation in both salary and benefits. We must work to bring balance between resources and accountability. We must also work to regain the respect this profession deserves.
If elected, I will do my best to move us forward in these goals. I believe that the experience I have in the Association over the last fifteen years has prepared me to do the job. I would appreciate your vote.
My name is Martha Reese and I am running for the office of CVEA Vice President and as a delegate to the WEA Representative Assembly. I have been very active in our association:
As you can see, I have worked with our association in many different capacities and have enjoyed it all! I bring an elementary view to the table, as well as a lot of experience. Currently, the Association and the District have a good working relationship. I will do all I can to see that this continues. I will work to keep the conversations ongoing. I would appreciate your vote.
