ASSOCIATION ELECTIONS

In February the Central Valley Education Association will be holding elections for next year’s officers and for delegates to the Washington Education Association Representative Assembly in May, the National Education Association Representative Assembly in July and a change in the Bylaws (see article on page 2). All six Association offices will be filled. The new term will begin the first week of July (after the NEA-RA) and last for one year. Any member of the Association is eligible to run for office. The CVEA President is now a full time position and the salary is equal to the person’s position on the salary schedule. Each of the other positions will be paid a stipend of $500 for the year.

The President’s primary responsibilities are to chair the Executive Board and Representative Council meetings, attend SEAT and UniServ meetings monthly, deal with grievances and sit on the bargaining team. The other officers will be required to attend the above meetings, be on the bargaining team and other duties as required by the By Laws.

The Washington Education Association Representative Assembly will be held in Spokane May 14-16. CVEA can send 12 delegates to the assembly. This is a great opportunity to get involved, meet new friends and learn more about the WEA.

The National Education Association Representative Assembly will be held in San Diego the first week of July. CVEA will send the President and two elected delegates. The Association will cover all expenses for this rewarding experience. Please consider representing the CVEA for any of these positions.

If you are interested in running for an Association Office, WEA-RA delegate, or NEA-RA delegate please send a letter of nomination to the Association office by mail, fax or e-mail by Friday, January 30. The letter should include the position(s) you are running for and some brief biographical information including years in the district, current assignment and any previous pertinent Association experience. All candidates will be listed in the February newsletter and the elections will be held the last week of February.

COP GRANT WINNERS

CVSD teachers were awarded 6 COP grants in December. Congratulations to Laurel Wendt (Adams), Leisa Mumford (Broadway), Sharon Naccarato and Paige Laws (Progress), Morgan Jones (Special Services), Lisa Cleveland, Dorinda Belcher and Dianna Chapman (North Pines) and Jenny Bryant (CVSD).

MEET THE CANDIDATES

There will be a general membership meeting prior to the Representative Council Meeting on Tuesday, February 17 to meet the candidates for Executive Board and to take nominations from the floor. The meeting will be held at Players and Spectators at 4:00 PM at 12828 E. Sprague. All members are invited. Members are also welcome to stay for the Rep Council meeting which will follow.

Proposed Change to the Bylaws

The executive board recommends that the terms of office for the president and vice president be amended as follows. In accordance with the CVEA Bylaws and Standing Rules, ratification requires a 2/3 vote of the membership. Please read the following proposal and be prepared to vote your conscience.

ARTICLE IX - ELECTIONS AND TERMS OF OFFICE

SECTION I - PRESIDENT

Beginning with the 2010-2011 school year, the The president shall be elected for a term of two years one year by means of a secret ballot following open nominations and in accordance with the procedures described in the Standing Rules of the Association, and shall serve as a delegate to the WEA and the NEA during his/her term of office.

SECTION II - VICE PRESIDENT

Beginning with the 2011-2012 school year, the The vice president shall be elected for a term of two years one year by means of a secret ballot following open nominations and in accordance with the procedures described in the Standing Rules of this Association.

Snow Makeup and Calendar Options

This is a topic that is getting a lot of discussion these days. It is still a little early to get worked up over what will happen next because no decisions have been made yet. If the students have to make up the time, the teaching staff will have to as well. If there are waiver days involved, your options are outlined on page 18 of the contract. Basically you can use your emergency days and any personal days you might still have. You also can simply record any time spent at your building outside of the working day beginning with December 17.

Other districts have a little easier go of this because they built some snow days into their calendars. Most chose 3 days and put them up against existing 3 day holidays. Their calendars showed 4-day weekends around President’s day and the Martin Luther King holiday. They will have to shorten these back to 3-day weekends but it does make it easier for them to make up the days. We surveyed the staff last year and this was an option that was voted down. The new administration is going to be looking at revisiting some of these options so it wouldn’t hurt to start up some discussions in your buildings. As usual, stay tuned for more information.

Another Snow Casualty

The snowy winter of 08-09 left it’s mark on Spokane and the CVEA Office as well. The good news is that the metal roof did a fine job of letting the snow slide off as designed. The bad new is that a lot of it slid off on the porch, which caused it to collapse. Good news is that there was little damage to anything else. Bad news is it will be a while before this gets repaired. Better news is, we have insurance which will help.

Volunteers Needed For WEA Rep Assembly

The Representative Assembly will be held in Spokane this May, starting on the afternoon of Thursday, May 14, and all day Friday and Saturday the 15th and 16th. I encourage all of you to run for the position of representative to experience the process of WEA governance. You can also volunteer to help out and pick up the experience without the total time commitment of a rep. Volunteers are needed for 4-hour shifts on all days. Mileage, parking and meals will be provided, as will substitutes for those who work on Friday. If you work a Friday shift they will expect that you also work at least one shift on Saturday. Give it some serious thought. It is a fun way to see what happens at RA and it is quick and easy. There will be training sessions for all and you won’t work alone. If you are interested, talk to your building rep or call or email the CVEA office.
