In February the Central Valley Education Association will be holding elections for next year’s officers and for delegates to the National Education Association Representative Assembly in July. All six Association offices will be filled. The new term will begin the first week of July (after the NEA-RA) and last for one year. Any member of the Association is eligible to run for office. The President’s position pays .6 of that person’s salary on the salary schedule. Each of the other positions will be paid a stipend of $500 for the year. Also on the ballot this year will be a proposal to increase the President’s salary from .6 to .8.
The President’s primary responsibilities are to chair the Executive Board and Representative Council meetings, attend SEAT and UniServ meetings monthly, handle all grievances and lead the bargaining team. The other officers will be required to attend the above meetings, be on the bargaining team and other duties as required by the By Laws.
The National Education Association Representative Assembly will be held in Orlando, Florida the first week of July. CVEA will send the President and three elected delegates. The Association will cover all expenses for this rewarding experience. Please consider representing the CVEA for any of these positions.
If you are interested in running for an Association Office or NEA-RA delegate please send a letter of nomination to the Association office by mail, fax or e-mail by Friday, January 27. The letter should include the position(s) you are running for and some brief biographical information including years in the district, current assignment and any previous pertinent Association experience. All candidates will be listed in the February newsletter and the elections will be held the last week of February.
There will be a general membership meeting prior to the Representative Council Meeting on Monday, February 13 to meet the candidates for Executive Board and to take nominations from the floor. The meeting will be held at Players and Spectators in the Dugout Room at 4:00PM at 12828 E. Sprague. All members are invited. Members are also welcome to stay for the Rep Council meeting which will follow.
Ring, ring, ring, “ CVEA, this is Kent.”
“Hello, my name is John Doe from ABC Company and I would like to talk to you about insurance for your members.”
We receive many phone calls each week from a variety of sources. One of those sources is from companies and their agents, representatives or brokers who wish to sell goods, services or policies to our members. They range from discounts on acupuncture or pet grooming to insurance and investment opportunities and everything in between. The requests are usually for the opportunity to make a pitch to our CVEA Representative Council and very often to use building reps to place materials in members’ mail boxes or to set up shop in staff rooms before or after school.
While CVEA does not have an official policy regarding such requests, our practice for a number of years has been to resist attempts to use the Association or our building reps to help companies sell products or policies to our members. Our policy has been to offer those companies an opportunity to participate in our annual benefit fair at the beginning of each school year.
The question is --Is this a good practice? Are we depriving our members access to information on such products, policies or investment opportunities or are we protecting the members from an onslaught of unwanted materials and sales pitches? I believe it is the latter. If we gave this opportunity to one company we would have to give it to all. It seems to me that we are living in the age of information overload. Between television, radio, the internet, unwanted phone calls, junk mail and faxes and spam we are getting all the information and sales pitches we need. It gives me a headache. I can get all the sales pitches and information I need from Google and my friends and relatives. I don’t think members need to get this at work as well. However, this is your Association and I am at your service. If you feel differently, please let me know (email: cvea@aol.com) and/or pass on your feelings to your building rep.
Thank you. kr
The Washington Education Association Representative Assembly will be held at the Tacoma Convention Center on March 23-25. The following CVEA members have applied to fill eight of the12 positions that we are allowed. (The CVEA President automatically gets the 12th seat.) Your building reps will be conducting elections this month to select our delegation.
As you can see we are still three members short of having a full delegation. If you are interested in filling one of those positions please call the CVEA office before January 27.
Thanks to all of the above for being willing to represent your fellow members at the convention.
